Is premium fuel a good choice for your engine

I do not feel premium fuel is a good choice for my engine. Premium fuel is much more expensive than regular fuel, and with fuel prices so high I can barely afford to pay what I''m paying now. I have also known people who had a lot of trouble with their engines after using premium fuel for the first time, so I would be worried that it would hurt my engine as well.
